"I am here" - with these powerful words, Françoise de Beauvoir confronts death. At the center of this sensitive play is not her famous daughter Simone, but her mother - and with her an entire family caught between care, support and different views of the world.
Simone de Beauvoir, an icon of feminism, does not appear here as a celebrated intellectual, but as a daughter. At her side: her sister Hélène, known to everyone as Poupette, a painter with her own view of life. Together they watch over their mother's deathbed, accompanied by companions who have long been part of the family of choice: Jean-Paul Sartre, Olga Kosakiewicz and Jacques-Laurent Bost.
"I am here" tells of farewells and affection, of family roles and autonomy. Original letters, conversations and memories are woven into a dense textual fabric that provides intimate insights into the inner lives of the characters. And between all of this, a Simone de Beauvoir shines through, vulnerable and tender, yet still holding on to her essential feminist ideas.
The ensemble of six actors lends body and voice to this emotional web and draws the audience into a story that is both deeply personal and universal. The open audio description - a description of the visual events - is an integral part of the production and enables a theater experience for both sighted and non-sighted audiences.
