Improvisation in music, dance and elsewhere

In the organizer's words:

This unique workshop for musicians, dancers and other artists takes place under the direction of musician and author Simon Rose and dancer and choreographer Ingo Reulecke. Previous participants have included professional dancers and musicians, but also artists who work across disciplines, or those who are simply curious.

The workshop:

  • Through improvisation in action we explore: The bodies of dancers and musicians in a shared space: how does our physical knowledge influence improvisational practice in dance and music?
  • Awareness and listening: How does the practice of listening and awareness help the development of composing during performance (improvisation) in music, dance and elsewhere?
  • Improvisation is essentially social - we create together (sympoiesis): How can this relational ability be fostered in practice? And how is collaboration understood in an interdisciplinary context?
  • Improvisation as performance: Is there a difference between improvisation in the workshop and public performance? How is the important relationship between improvisation and performance understood?

Taken together, these questions lead us to consider improvisation both as part of an environment and as a process for creating it. And while these are big questions, this process does not lose sight of the importance of simplicity, playfulness and inclusivity. This is how we develop our practice.

Workshop participants will have the opportunity to perform in the new series The Imaginary Museum that evening. This is by no means compulsory, but rather an opportunity to try out ideas and collaborations and further develop the practice through public performance.
