Inner Mining / Outer Mining:
A global constellation
February 3 - March 14, 2024
Group exhibition with artistic positions from South Africa and Western Europe
Opening on Friday, February 2, at 7 pm
at the Künstlerhaus Dortmund, Sunderweg 1, 44147 Dortmund
What do social media influencers have in common with miners in South Africa and the Ruhr region? Have people's bodies and minds become a kind of mine today, whose inner resources, such as their dreams and emotions, are shaped by consumption and work and appropriated by companies? With questions like these, the artists represented in the exhibition explore forms of extractivism in the 21st century.
By bringing North and South together, it is possible to think about the connection between the extraction of natural resources and the inner nature of human beings. The discussion of these two levels also reveals interesting parallels between South Africa and the Ruhr region.

100 years of Waschkaue
Inner Mining / Outer Mining is the first of three anniversary exhibitions celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Künstlerhaus Dortmund. The building was constructed in 1924 as a washhouse and operations building for Schacht Westfalia and was later used as an office building for Westfälische Wohnstätten AG, as the administrative headquarters of Deutsche Edelstahlwerke and most recently by the University of Applied Sciences and Arts for Design. Students from this school occupied the building and fought for its current status, self-administration. In 1987, the Künstlerhaus was renovated and converted with funds from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the city of Dortmund and Sparkasse Dortmund. As part of the anniversary exhibitions, there will be a program with actors from the history of the house.
