InSpirit: Duo Organ Sax, Luise Volkmann & Kit Downes

The Downs/Volkmann duo meet in contemplative improvisation, structured by small musical sketches in the form of wishes . The wishes are titled "For my father", for example, and thus offer material for variation in terms of content and music. These wishes contain lyrical melodies or a sound idea and develop into the improvisation. For the concert in the Gedächtniskirche, a composition of new music by Luise Volkmann will also be played, which was written especially for this concert.

Kit Downs is a British organist from London who is internationally renowned for his colorful sound spectrum on the organ, both as a soloist and in a band context.

Luise Volkmann is a German saxophonist and composer from Cologne, whose work in France and Germany brings together noise, energy and poetry in a lyrical way. The encounter in the Gedächtniskirche is the first meeting of these two young musicians and their musical languages.

InSpirit - jazz as a spiritual musical experience in the Gedächtniskirche

The InSpirit series has characterized the summer in the Gedächtniskirche for many years: the combination of contemporary jazz music and spiritual content in a church space is unique in this form in Berlin.

The famous blue light of the stained glass windows creates an incomparable atmosphere in which to enjoy jazz as a spiritual musical experience. Renowned jazz musicians from Germany and abroad perform the evenings of the series together with theologians.

The artistic director of InSpirit is the organist of the Gedächtniskirche, Sebastian Heindl. He not only brings his personal enthusiasm for contemporary jazz to the selection of the invited musicians, but also takes part in some evenings on the large organ or Hammond organ himself.
