International Jazz Day: Simon Lucaciu Trio

Nothing can be more boring than a sound in which everything is known and familiar, without surprises or new insights. This is probably one of the reasons why pianist Simon Lucaciu's trio, founded in 2016, feels the constant urge to consciously research music and question boundaries of all kinds. However, thought processes, analyses and elaborate methodologies do not lead to cerebral sounds, but to sensually intense pieces in which the boundaries between composition and improvisation are blurred.

In 2022, Simon Lucaciu, Florian Müller and Lukas Hecker were awarded the Central German Jazz Prize. The following year, the trio, which sees itself as a working band, was honored with the Leipzig Jazz Newcomer Award.

Simon Lucaciu comes from a successful family clan. His brothers Antonio (saxophone) and Robert (bass) are active in very different projects. The three Lucacius worked together with drumming legend Günter Baby Sommer. Simon has also demonstrated his musical skills in a duo with saxophonist Christopher Kunz, in the Lucaciu/ Gellert/ Bergler trio and in the band Aiam1 Alarm.
