"Ekstra Bløde" - that's what it says on the pack of extra soft handkerchiefs in Denmark. But "bløde" doesn't just mean "soft" - it also means "bleed". Or "to pour". In the sense of rain. When Iso Herquist plays swing tunes from the golden era of jazz, it's not really soft. His voice sounds more like a smoky jazz club after a very, very long blues session. Like your favorite terrycloth pajamas that have been washed too hot: velvety, but scratchy and heartbreaking. Like missing the bus in the pouring rain. Simply a full broadside of blues. The versatile, jazzy sound and the musical depth of his ukulele are also surprising - and not just for those who previously thought the small stringed instrument was a Hawaiian gimmick. It swings and grooves and kicks - nothing is missing. The program is just as suitable for dreamy listening as it is for
