Jakob Maes Big Band

In the organizer's words:

Make two into one - at least that's the musical motto of Jakob Maes. The jazz trumpeter and composer unites two musical worlds in the sound of his jazz orchestra, which are usually seen as antagonistic: That of the big band and that of the symphony orchestra.

However, it is doubtful whether he gave this much thought beforehand: Because the music of the 21-piece ensemble seems entirely fluid, seamless, instinctive - and therefore not at all cerebral or laboratory-conceptualized. This is perhaps also due to the fact that Maes is working with young musicians of his generation in this project, for whom artificial boundaries such as these are a thing of the past. Instead, the focus is on spirit and the joy of playing, which unfolds in the interplay between a tight band structure and improvisational freewheeling.

For the current tour, the jazz orchestra has developed a new program that includes compositions by the band leader as well as pieces by band members Moritz Renner, Nico Weber and Lea Reichel.
