Jamie Lawson is a man of quiet tones - and long distances. He picked up the guitar as a child in Plymouth and moved to Ireland at the age of 17, where he made a living as a pub musician. But his career was slow to take off: It wasn't until 2003 that his debut album "Last Night Stars" was released, followed a further seven years later by "The Pull of the Moon". His big breakthrough was a long time coming until 2011 - and came completely unexpectedly.
It was a song called "Wasn't Expecting That" that changed everything. Lawson had put it online with a simple music video, but then the Irish station Today FM played it - and suddenly the song found itself in the charts, at number 3 in Ireland.
Four years later, the song proved to be an international hit: it climbed to number 3 in the Australian charts, was certified double platinum there and reached number 6 in the UK.
Ed Sheeran, long since a global star, became aware of Lawson and was the first artist to sign him to his newly founded label Gingerbread Man Records. In 2015, the self-titled album "Jamie Lawson" was released - it shot to the top of the British charts and earned the musician the prestigious Ivor Novello Award for Best Song - musically and lyrically. Suddenly, the former pub musician found himself in huge stadiums, supporting Sheeran or James Blunt in front of tens of thousands of fans.
After two more albums - "Happy Accidents" (2017) and "The Years In Between" (2019) - Lawson took some time out. He became a father, then the pandemic hit, and a planned six-month break turned into three years. But he made the most of the time: two EPs were released during the lockdown and he took control of his career. His contract with Warner Music expired and Lawson founded his own label: Not Too Bad. "This attitude has carried over to the new album," he says. "I prefer to record my vocals alone so that I can take my time. No one is watching me, I can hit as many wrong notes as I want - until I find the right one." The result is "Little Weaknesses", a collection of 14 songs that deliberately avoids radio suitability and concentrates entirely on the music that Lawson loves.
Ed Sheeran himself describes the new album as "probably his strongest work to date". No wonder Jamie Lawson is now going on tour again with this work.
2025 marks the tenth anniversary of the release of "Jamie Lawson" - a milestone that the artist will be celebrating in style. Not only with a new recording of the album including exciting duets, but also with an anniversary tour on which he will perform the album in its entirety. In addition to the well-known hits, he will also perform favorite songs from his entire repertoire.
German fans are in for a special treat: Jamie Lawson will be giving five concerts in Germany in November. An opportunity to experience a singer-songwriter who has never taken the easy route - which is precisely why he sounds so authentic.
