Gnar Gnar Rad [ˈnɑːrˈnɑːrˈræd ] is a project by Frankfurt-based double bassist Moritz Koser.
Their declared aims are to find their own path somewhere between Charles Mingus and Ornette Coleman, to incorporate modern influences, to take every freedom they can to then dispense with tradition, to not take anything too seriously, to deconstruct everything and then rebuild it, and to have as much fun as possible in the process. Musically, the quartet moves between punky hard bop, free passages, groove-based pieces, pop melodies and noise.
There is no harmony instrument, which creates more unoccupied tonal space that gives the band members more freedom in their interpretation, but also places more responsibility on them and presents a challenge for composition and arrangement.
