Joan As Police Woman is the band project of singer and violinist Joan Wasser. Joan Wasser chose the name for the project because friends of hers said she looked like Angie Dickinson, who was popular as the lead actress in the television series Police Woman.

In addition to her singing, she plays guitar, piano and clarinet. She describes her music as punk rock R&B or American soul music. Joan sees artists such as Joni Mitchell and Nina Simone as role models. The Guardian called her the Dusty Springfield of indie pop.

In August 2024, the New York-based musician and singer-songwriter released her latest track and the accompanying music video for "Full Time Heist", the third pre-release song from her upcoming album "Lemons, Limes & Orchids". The piano-driven song "Full Time Heist" features Joan As A Police Woman reflecting on an encounter with someone obsessed with the need for approval. Joan describes the person as someone who will do anything to convince the world and themselves that they should be adored, symbolically blindfolding others to mask the reality. Her powerfully controlled voice takes center stage, sung almost in a whisper and rising to small bursts of harmony and intensity. Refreshingly honest, the lyrics examine the fleeting trappings of fame, but without judgment. "Full Time Heist" follows the already highly acclaimed singles "Long For Ruin" and "Back Again".
