JOHN LAW'S RE-CREATIONS

John Law ("One of Britain's most inventive and versatile jazz pianists", International Piano Magazine, 2014) presents Re-Creations: creative arrangements of some of the world's best-known music.

John, an award-winning classical piano prodigy, turned away from classical piano study at the age of 23 to pursue jazz and improvised music, and has been involved in and acclaimed for a variety of contemporary jazz and classical projects: from solo piano concerts and albums, to trio and quartet tours and recordings, to large-scale works for his semi-classical ensemble Cornucopia.

Re-Creations was formed in 2016 as a counterpart to John's group Congregation, which mixed contemporary jazz with electronics and backing tracks. Re-Creations began as a fun project with the aim of playing many different tunes from different genres. It quickly developed artistically to the point where it began to rival Congregation in terms of artistic excellence and spontaneous creativity. The arrangements became more complex and interesting, while the fact that the audience almost always knew the tunes meant that the group was at the same time very accessible. The quartet's repertoire includes jazz classics such as Monk, Miles Davis and Gershwin as well as pieces from the pop/rock/indie genre (Pink Floyd, Beatles, The Jam, Stevie Wonder, Bon Iver, Michael Jackson, Radiohead). Gradually, classical pieces also appeared in the group's repertoire: for example, their versions of the Kyrie from Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle, Debussy's Claire De Lune and Satie's Gymnopédie.

With the winner of the UK Parliamentary Jazz Award, saxophonist Sam Crockatt, Danish bassist and composer Henrik Jensen and a new young up-and-comer on the British jazz drumming scene Alex Goodyear.
