John Stowell - guitar
Norbert Dömling - double bass
The New York-born musician John Stowell, who now lives in Portland (Oregon), also tours Europe every year. In 2022, the organizer Eberhard Petri initiated a meeting with bassist Norbert Dömling, which took the form of a concert. And it went really well without a rehearsal in a very individual way.
The only agreement, apart from the choice of pieces, was a remark by John, who said that he had nothing against walking bass lines, but that he liked to play rhythmically and harmonically, with an open mind, more like a joint conversation and not so much fixed in a division of roles into accompanist and soloist. This suited Norbert's way of playing very well, because that's how he likes it too.
This remark by John could also be used to briefly describe the duo's music. It could also be described as melodic jazz, finely nuanced, with a feather-light rhythm and harmonic surprises, in which the branching melodies of the improvisations lead off the beaten track of this genre.
The well-known guitarist Larry Coryell once said:
"John Stowell plays jazz, but he doesn't cater to a single cliché, he has incredible originality. John is a masterful creator."
Lothar Trampert wrote in 2023 in Gitarre und Bass Magazin:
"Dömling's instrumental range of expression is always surprising and his organic connection or transition of accompaniment patterns into soloistic passages is unique. Because even in lead spots he still gives the music support and structure."
