Judy Chicago: Revelations
Ruhrfestspiele art exhibition at the Kunsthalle Recklinghausen
"Judy Chicago: Revelations", the Ruhrfestspiele 2025 art exhibition, is dedicated to a pioneer of feminist art. Born in the USA in 1939, she rose to prominence in the late 1960s by creating art from a woman-centered perspective and challenging the male-dominated art world. As an all-rounder, her work is characterized by a great love of experimentation and a fascination with craftsmanship, which is evident in her working methods and materials. Over the course of her six-decade career, Chicago has developed a visual language that challenges the absence or even erasure of women in Western cultural history. Her projects address weighty themes such as birth and death, masculinity and power, the Holocaust and destruction - and Chicago represents a long-standing commitment to climate justice.
The exhibition was first shown at the Serpentine, London, and reimagined with the Kunsthalle for the special conditions of Recklinghausen. As a comprehensive retrospective, it bears the title of an illuminated manuscript written by Chicago during the creation of "The Dinner Party" (1974-79) - a monumental installation at the Brooklyn Museum, New York, celebrating the achievements of 1038 women. With over 160 exhibits - including works on paper, embroideries, photographs and videos from her "Atmospheres Series" in the Californian desert, many of which are being shown in Germany for the first time - the exhibition showcases one of the most important artists of our time.
Complemented by a performance program, visitors will gain a kaleidoscopic insight into Chicago's universe, whose central message is embodied in a participatory work: "What if Women Ruled the World?" This work was created in the early 1990s, was expanded in 2020 with the fashion house DIOR and has since gone global as a digital quilt. It invites us to think about the world in an alternative and visionary way.
The exhibition is accompanied by a performance program. Further information at kunsthalle-recklinghausen.de
