Julian Rosefeldt . Nothing is Original

In the organizer's words:

Deconstructing the myth machine that is cinema, playing with media stereotypes and quoting from art, cultural and film history run like a common thread through Julian Rosefeldt's work. His comprehensive exhibition at C/O Berlin highlights recurring motifs and questions in his photographic works and film installations of the last 30 years - and provides a rare glimpse into his artistic toolbox for the first time with unpublished storyboards, sketches and making-of shots. Starting with Rosefeldt's architectural studies, early photo reportages and work in the theater, the development towards cinematic fiction is traced. The focus is on the visualization of history and ideologies as well as the examination of classic film genres or the appropriation of archive material and found footage. The exhibition title is borrowed from a quote by Jim Jarmusch and sums up Rosefeldt's methodology: "Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. [...] In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: 'It's not where you take things from-it's where you take them to."'
