Julie Mehretu

In the organizer's words:

KAIROS / HAUNTOLOGICAL VARIATIONS

The Ethiopian-American artist Julie Mehretu (*1970, Addis Ababa) is one of the most influential painters of our time. With around 100 works, this largest survey exhibition in Germany to date shows the entire spectrum of Mehretu's work, from her early, urbanistic line drawings of the 1990s to her most recent, spectacular abstract paintings. Time-based media inspired by Mehretu's work will also be presented, including a music album, a documentary film and a video work. The exhibition shows Mehretu's creative process. She often takes media images of political events and historical settings as her starting point and translates them into abstract compositions, which she covers with notations, overpaintings and maskings. With a selection of Mehretu's reference material and works on paper, some of which have never been shown before, the exhibition at K21 contextualizes the conceptual thinking behind the artist's works.

The exhibition is a collaboration between the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf and the Pinault Collection, which presented "Julie Mehretu. Ensemble" at the Palazzo Grassi (Venice).
