Lifestyle writer Justin Kemp (Nicholas Hoult) is in the midst of preparing for the imminent addition to his family - his wife Allison (Zoey Deutch) is nine months pregnant - when he is called to jury duty in a murder trial. The trial involves a horrific crime: James Sythe (Gabriel Basso) is accused of killing his girlfriend Kendall (Francesca Eastwood) and throwing her body into a street ravine. All the evidence actually speaks against the accused, but public defender Erik Resnick (Chris Messina) is nevertheless convinced of his client's innocence. But for the public prosecutor Faith Killebrew (Toni Collette), the matter is clear - especially as she would rather end the case today than tomorrow. As the trial progresses, Justin begins to suspect something terrible: could he himself have something to do with the case?
