Kabinettstücke: Anna Andreeva – Design und Abstraktion

In the organizer's words:

Anna Andreeva (1917-2008) was one of the most successful designers of the Soviet Union. After studying textile design at WChUTEMAS, one of the most innovative art academies of the interwar period, Andreeva worked as a designer at the renowned state textile factory Red Rose Silk Factory, named after Rosa Luxemburg, from 1941. Following on from the progressive teachings of her school, the artist created radical, geometric-abstract designs over the next 40 years. This is all the more remarkable as state-recognized art had already moved far away from its constructivist beginnings at this time and only Socialist Realism was accepted as an art form. Despite this, Andreeva created innovative fabric designs in various work complexes that cleverly undermined the repressive political system by accompanying her designs with associated narratives. Her designs in the Electrification series were initially rejected as "abstract propaganda", but after Andreeva pointed to the electrification of cities as a central pillar of Soviet progress, the designs were produced for over ten years. Her works are now in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and were honored this year in a major retrospective at MOMus in Thessaloniki.
