HHY & The Kampala Unit live at Gaswerk Music Days 2025
HHY & The Kampala Unit dive into the mutations of rhythm and sound, blending funk, techno, dub, martial horns, and ecstatic percussion with haunting cinematic backdrops. Founded by Portuguese producer Jonathan Uliel Saldanha (HHY & The Macumbas) during a Nyege Nyege residency, the group features fierce trumpet player and ghetto activist Florence Lugemwa (Nandawula), along with an extended family of collaborators, including percussionist Sekelembele (Fulu Muziki) and performer Exoce.

Their debut album Lithium Blast, released on Nyege Nyege Tapes, unfolds as a layered, synesthetic cosmogony soaked in oneiric sci-fi atmospheres. Blending dub, techno, traditional drumming, and trance with ghostly cinematic passages, it's a striking exploration of sound: tactile, immersive, and charged with raw energy. Haunting brass, mutating percussive rhythms, and cascading electronics move through rich, technicolored textures, generating a dramatic tension between rupture and stability, subtext and hyperrealism. Mesmerizing and infectious.

The first festival date highlights artists from the Nyege Nyege sphere alongside other African and local voices. Whether drawing from ancestral traditions or exploring Afrofuturistic frequencies, dusting off archival tapes or reimagining sounds from Africa and its diasporas, each artist leaves a distinct mark on the arc connecting African pasts and futures.

Gaswerk Music Days (12.07. - 19.07.) is the summer music festival organized by Gaswerksiedlung Berlin and taking place in its lush gardens, BLOCK1 event space, and creative studios. The event unites experimental electronics, African sounds, jazz, noise, avant-pop, kraut, improvisation and dance music under its "Radical Live Music" flag, binding and crossing genres in a program with over 20 acts on 2 stages.
