EN: "ALJAMA" is a temporal and geographical musical journey through the Mediterranean region, which begins with the songs of the ancient Sephardic, Christian and Muslim communities of the Iberian Peninsula (Al Andalus) and ideally follows the migration movements of the peoples over the centuries to present-day Turkey. The focus is initially on the ancient Iberian communities, which coexisted for many centuries, and then follows their migrations over time through the Mediterranean (as in the case of the Sephardic diaspora) to Turkey. The name "Aljama" refers to the Arab and Sephardic minorities who continued to live on the Iberian Peninsula after the fall of the Arab Empire.

The world music project Aljama is dedicated to the populations of the Mediterranean region in their ideal unity and synergy and focuses on songs and sounds that unite music and cultures from the entire Mediterranean region.

The album "ALJAMA, Ancient Songs of the Mediterranean" by Claudio Merico and Giulia Tripoti, produced by Karkum Project (January 2022), is the result of research, studies and concerts in Italy that began in 2018. It was born from the musical program "Sefarad" and is the result of musical experiences in which personal artistic and aesthetic nuances are not lacking. With a partly modern, not necessarily philological vision, the attempt is made to internalize these wonderful sounds.

The moods range from purely melodic and meditative moments to rhythmic and rousing passages. From the Sephardic Romances to the Cantigas de Santa Maria and the Andalusian Al-Ala music, the album reflects in perfect harmony the clash of cultures, religions and peoples that has characterized the history of the "Middle Sea" for centuries.
