Katharina Thalbach finally became one of the big stars of German cinema and theater with Volker Schlöndorff's film adaptation of Günter Grass' global success "The Tin Drum". In it, she plays Maria Truczinski, with whom the main character Oskar Mazerath (played by David Bennent), who is the same age but has remained small, falls in love. On his third birthday, Oskar has decided to stop growing. The film was awarded the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1979 and the German Film Prize before becoming the first German production to win an Oscar in 1980.
