Kavaliersdelikt* #20: BURNBABYBURN

Who was Joan of Arc? Based on Friedrich Schiller's "The Maid of Orleans", Katharina Shakina together with Katja Gaudard and her artistic team expand the tragedy on stage and screen at the Exhalle into a larger-than-life show into the psychology of one of the most interesting figures in European history. Religious fanatic or prototype of a feminist figurehead? Crusader or liberator of France? In "burnbabyburn", Joan becomes the prism of their interpretations and attributions and gives us a glimpse of a young woman who takes the fate of her country into her own hands, precisely because the powerful do not.

As a heroine of the common people, Johanna shows us the dilemma faced by freedom fighters: For what purpose and with what consequences is (armed) violence to be legitimized? There is no simple answer to this question. Nor does "burnbabyburn" give us one. What it does give us is a perspective in which failure becomes a possibility. And we can learn what it means to stand up for your ideals.
