Documentary film
Europe puts up the walls - in the midst of a humanitarian catastrophe.
The documentary "Kein Land für Niemand - Abschottung eines Einwanderungslandes" sheds light on the drastic consequences of Europe's isolationist policy and Germany's role in this paradigm shift.
While Germany's asylum and migration policy is increasingly moving away from humanitarian principles, the situation at the EU's external borders is escalating. The documentary "No Country for Nobody" accompanies a rescue mission in the Mediterranean, shows the catastrophic conditions in refugee camps and gives a voice to people who have survived the life-threatening journey to Europe.
At the same time, the film takes a look at political and social developments in Germany: a growing right-wing populism is shaping the discourse, flight and migration are increasingly being criminalized and humanitarian aid is coming under pressure. Germany is repeatedly setting the pace and Europe is following suit. Through exclusive interviews with activists, academics and political decision-makers, "No Country for Nobody" questions the current narrative on flight and migration and sheds light on the mechanisms by which fear and populism determine the political agenda. How did it get this far? And what alternatives are there to a Europe that continues to seal itself off?
A film about a crisis that is far more than a debate about borders - but one about humanity, responsibility and the future of Europe.
The directing duo, consisting of Max Ahrens and Maik Lüdemann, met in 2014 while studying film. "Kein Land für Niemand" is their joint feature film debut. Maik is a director and cameraman and has shot award-winning cinema, TV and social media advertising for companies and non-profit organizations. For his documentary "Minden Replying", Maik went on a rescue mission in the Mediterranean in 2016 and experienced the extent of the catastrophe at Europe's borders up close for the first time. Max is an author, director and cultural scientist. As part of his studies, he focused on the ideological, societal and social contexts surrounding the topic of migration and flight and specialized in researching the cinematic representation of trauma.
"When we started working on the film in 2022, we had no idea what we would be facing over the next three years. We wanted to find other, more hopeful and constructive perspectives on the topic of migration that went beyond recurring New Year's Eve and outdoor pool debates. Then the film and we were swept away by a historic shift to the right. "Kein Land für Niemand" is now the result of our rather intense journey through current events and documents the migration policy shift we are currently experiencing. Our aim is to contribute to other, more complex and more humane migration debates and to inspire hope for a future worth living for all."
The realization of the film was made possible by a funding alliance involving the following organizations: Sea Watch, United4Rescue, Pro Asyl, German Doctors, Mennonite Relief Organization and Sea Eye.
