In his first solo exhibition "The Toybox", Kevin Simion takes us back to the world of our childhood. With his photorealistic drawings, which he puts on paper with colored pencils, he brings old memories back to life.
With his impressive attention to detail and texture, Simion manages to make the things he draws look almost so deceptively real that they only merge with the paper again after a closer look, thus retaining old memories of our past in our present.
In addition to this visually stunning examination, "The Toybox" also encourages us to reflect on the current challenges of our time. In view of increasing digitalization and the growing consumption of screen media, the question arises as to how we can foster our children's creativity and imagination when their world is increasingly dominated by cell phones, consoles and TV sets. And what actually makes a good toy?
With "The Toybox", Kevin Simion succeeds in creating an archive of memories to let us be children again and at the same time raise awareness by asking ourselves what our children really need. Apps and TV series, or coloring books and toys?
