What is going on with Kim Jiyoung? A woman in her early thirties who lives with her husband and child on the outskirts of Seoul, a city of millions, suddenly starts behaving conspicuously. She imitates the women around her, shamelessly abandons her role as a considerate wife and mother and snubs her relatives. Therapy is supposed to help put Kim Jiyoung "back in order". But a look at her biography reveals far more than an individual fate. Shaped from an early age to keep to herself as a girl and to "smile away" humiliation and abuse, Kim Jiyoung constantly encounters barriers: in her family, in her education, in her professional life and finally as a mother. Author Cho Nam-Joo tells the story of a painfully normal woman's life in a sober and penetrating way. Her book, which became an international bestseller, shocked Korean society and caused heated debates and protests. Together with a German-Korean ensemble and team, director Marie Schleef brings KIM JIYOUNG, GEBOREN 1982 to the stage of Depot 2 as a German-language premiere. With her visually powerful works, the director continuously devotes herself to female biographies and focuses on stories that have long found no place in the conventional canon.
