In this book, Knut Elstermann embarks on an extraordinary journey to Johann Sebastian Bach. The various cinema and television films that have dealt with the great composer over the decades serve as a common thread. He visits the original locations of Bach's life and talks to filmmakers and music enthusiasts. Elstermann's book is a personal declaration of love, while at the same time entertainingly exploring the fundamental questions of biographical storytelling. Where is the line between exaggeration and trivialization? How can an authentic portrait be created when so much has to be invented? Especially in the case of an artist whose personality is completely overshadowed by his works.

Knut Elstermann, born in 1960, studied journalism in Leipzig and has worked as a freelance presenter and film journalist since reunification, primarily for MDR and RBB (radioeins). He has written books and numerous features for television and radio, including on cinema in Israel and Russia and DEFA history. Knut Elstermann is a member of the Academy of Performing Arts.
