György Ligeti composed the harpsichord piece Continuum in 1986. The special feature of the piece lies in the extremely fast repetition of notes that follow each other so closely that the human ear no longer perceives them as individual events. Instead, a floating, constantly changing stream of sound emerges, creating the impression of a coherent mass of sound. With Continuum, Ligeti explored the limits of auditory perception.
György Ligeti, who gave his name to the ligeti center, would have been 102 years old on 28.05.2025. On the occasion of the exhibition "Composing with the computer. Ligeti's vision of an interdisciplinary center", we are celebrating Ligeti's birthday with a special edition of KlangwerkStadt. Techniques and concepts from Ligeti's work "Continuum" will be applied to modern synthesizers. The aim is to deepen the understanding of the original piece and at the same time to discover new creative possibilities in music production with synthesizers.
The workshop is free of charge.
