Yasuko (Yoshiko Tanaka), 20 years old, is on her way to visit her uncle Shigematsu (Kazuo Kitamura) when Japan is struck by one of the greatest disasters of all: the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The detonation does not affect Yasuko - but the radioactive "black" rain does. Five years later, the young woman is unable to find a husband. Everyone fears that she is contaminated and therefore unable to bear healthy children. Her uncle Shigematsu tries to prove that his niece is healthy. She eventually meets the mentally ill neighbor boy Yuichi (Keisuke Ishida). He is also suffering from the consequences of the war. During the Second World War, he had to throw himself in front of American tanks with a hand grenade...
"Black Rain" is based on the novel of the same name by Masuji Ibuse. The book and film deal with the effects of the atomic bomb attack on Hiroshima.
