Tef, injera, berbere, buna... never heard of them? Tef is an alternative to wheat and is used to make the Ethiopian pancake "injera". There are a variety of dishes to go with it, the spice mixture berbere is their main flavoring. Due to the rituals of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, there is also a rich vegetarian diet with exotic lentil and vegetable dishes, unlike in many African cultures. Finally, the Ethiopian coffee ceremony "Buna" ensures that the community stays together, as no guest is allowed to leave until the beans have been roasted over the flame and turned into the fine, strong Habesha mocha.

Degene and his wife initially trained in a German kitchen and opened the Fasika restaurant in the center of Cologne in 2002. Today, it rightly enjoys a very good reputation that extends beyond the city's borders.
