by Heinrich von Kleist in an adaptation by Marco Baliani
In his novella, Kleist tells the story of how the righteous Kohlhaas becomes one of the "most horrible people of his time".
Is the injustice suffered by Michael Kohlhaas enough reason for him to become the leader of a bloody revolt? What turns him into a raging murderer - and makes him suddenly change his mind?
Marco Baliani's theater version explores the question of whether there is more than black and white. How much freedom do you have when you are confronted with oppressive mechanisms? Can vigilante justice be legitimate when the law fails? Can there be justice in a system in which power is abused? Alone on stage, Franco Melis explores these contradictions, which can be found not only in society but also in the individual, in the character of Kohlhaas.
Andrea Gronemeyer's production has been in the COMEDIA Theater repertoire since 1998 - timeless in theme and form.
