"Konversion konkret" – Filmabend & Gespräch

"Conversion in practice" - film evening & discussion with factory collective exGKN for Future and Tobi Rosswog

422 workers at a car parts factory in Campi Bisenzio near Florence were laid off without notice in July 2021. Since then, they have occupied the factory, organized various events and demonstrations with tens of thousands of people and launched a fundraising campaign. Their aim is to transform their workplace into an eco-socialist factory that is run by the workers themselves and produces solar panels and cargo bikes.

A documentary from June 2022 provides insights into the dispute: the workers talk about how they are rooted in the region and why 30,000 people demonstrated with them. They explain why they chose the slogan "Insorgiamo!" ("Let's stand up!"), the slogan of the partisans who liberated Florence in 1944.
But they also talk about their collaboration with climate activists and what they would like to produce. They also talk about the fact that, as things stand, it is not the workers who are responsible for the ecological damage caused by production: "Nobody asked me what I would like to produce when they hired me. They hired me and that's it." (Quote from the video)

Following the 30-minute documentary, we will give an insight into current events together with Tobi Rosswog and discuss the idea of conversion examples. If technically possible, with a live link to workers on site in Italy.
