The selected texts, performed by actor Moritz Hahn, and the chamber music works played by soloists from the National Theatre Orchestra reflect the turbulent period between the world wars and the associated social changes and political upheavals.
Kurt Tucholsky describes the anonymous and hectic atmosphere of urban life in his poem Augen in der Großstadt (Eyes in the Big City), which gives the event its name. He observes the crowds of people pushing through the streets in the morning and traces the loneliness and alienation that prevails in the midst of the urban hustle and bustle.
The emphasis on objectivity, precision and practicality, which is often combined with a critical approach, runs through all the other literary texts and corresponds with the clear and comprehensible musical language of the compositions.
