Last year, the Northern Lights were spotted over Brandenburg for the first time in a long time. On this 'Cosmic Wednesday', researchers from the Geo Research Center Potsdam (GFZ) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) will explain how these fascinating light effects are created and why they can rarely be seen here. We will learn a lot about space weather: environmental conditions in space that are influenced by solar activity. Space weather can affect space-based telecommunications, broadcasting, weather services, navigation and even electricity distribution. In addition to beautiful luminous phenomena, these events may also affect our modern, technology-based society.
