Three times the orphan Krabat sees a black raven in a dream. Three times he hears a voice calling him to come to the mill in Koselbruch. He answers the call and starts an apprenticeship as one of twelve young men - supposedly as a miller. However, he soon realizes that the other journeymen have strange abilities and that the mill, whose sounds are reminiscent of the song of the dead, is probably not just grinding grain.
Krabat is fascinated by the power he can acquire in this school of black magic. But he also has to learn that it comes at a high price: Journeymen die in mysterious circumstances. When the master of the mill offers Krabat the chance to take his place, Krabat must decide whether he dares to resist him - and what he is prepared to risk to do so.
The mill in Koselbruch is a mysteriously attractive place and a shelter from the war, but it is also a life-threatening prison with the strict rules and rituals of an authoritarian, patriarchal system. Otfried Preußler himself calls KRABAT the "story of my generation and [that of] all young people who come into contact with power and its temptations and become entangled in it.
