In the summer of 1989, traumatized literature student Ed (Jonathan Berlin) flees from his past to the Baltic Sea island of Hiddensee. He finds work in the excursion restaurant "Zum Klausner", where he meets the charismatic Kruso (Albrecht Schuch). He has his own philosophy of freedom and looks after the "castaways" - all those who come to the island because they have broken up with the state or failed. The GDR begins to fall apart around their utopia of freedom and eventually Kruso's world also begins to totter.
The film, based on the award-winning novel by Lutz Seiler, tells a moving story of friendship, loss and the longing for freedom.
