What is it about?

"The Secret of the Masters: Max Liebermann" - A film by Vanessa Auktor and Nicole Zepter

Max Liebermann's 1882 painting "The Lawn Bleachers" holds a secret: how did the genre painting become a landscape? This question is explored in the fourth episode of the five-part 3sat series "The Secret of the Masters". With the help of the latest technology, a team of experts researches the background to the painting's creation, and the painter Tim Ernst attempts to make a perfect copy of the work. The episode was recorded at the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne. The German edition of the Dutch series "The Secret of the Masters" is hosted by art expert Dr. Bianca Berding, known from "Bares für Rares".

The presenter of the 3sat series "Das Geheimnis der Meister" has been an expert in the ZDF production "Bares für Rares" since 2019. The art historian also worked for many years as a consultant at the Cologne fairs Art Cologne and Cologne Fine Art & Antiques.

Tim Ernst, painter
After studying at the State Academy of Fine Arts, the painter has been working as a freelance artist since 2006. In "The Secret of the Masters", he delves deep into the artists' way of painting and thinking.
