What's it about?

In his lecture "Dutch and Flemish flower painting of the seventeenth century" Fred Meijer will present a birds-eye view of Dutch and Flemish floral still-life painting from the seventeenth century. He will discuss the roots and the stylistic developments of the genre and highlight some of the most important masters. He will also shed light on some of the more interesting lesser-known representatives, however, and show how the oeuvres of the various painters often interconnect. He will share numerous colorful images of these flower paintings that are a delight to the eye, both to the connoisseur and to the general public.

In his lecture "Dutch and Flemish flower painting of the 17th century", Fred Meijer will give an overview of Dutch and Flemish flower still lifes of this period. He sheds light on the origins and stylistic developments of the genre and introduces some of its most important representatives. He also focuses on lesser-known painters and explains how their works are interlinked. With numerous colorful flower paintings, he offers both connoisseurs and the general public a visual treat.

Fred G. Meijer worked at the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD) in the Hague from 1980 to 2017, lastly as senior curator. Subsequently, he founded Fred G. Meijer Art History (www.fredgmeijer.com), providing art-historical services. He specializes in Dutch and Flemish art, particularly from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, with a special focus on still-life painting.
