KunstBewusst: Frans Snyders: Bilder für die Sinne

In the organizer's words:

A lecture by Hildegard Van de Velde as part of the FREUNDE "KunstBewusst" series

What is it all about?

Throughout his life, Frans Snyders devoted himself to creating variations on still lifes, with works depicting animals, market and hunting scenes. His works, which give the impression of spontaneity, are in fact carefully thought-out and staged compositions. He returned to Antwerp from Italy in 1609. During this time, the city on the Scheldt witnessed the announcement of the Twelve Years' Truce in the Eighty Years' War and cherished the hope of an economic upturn. Antwerp had to regain its popularity. Although there is no clear evidence to suggest that Snyders took on the role of a marketer, his colorful paintings depicting a variety of fruits, vegetables, fresh fish and meat are considered convincing and attracted attention throughout Europe.

Who is our guest?

Hildegard Van de Velde holds a Master's degree in Fine Arts from the University of Ghent and a Master's degree in Library and Documentation Science from the University of Antwerp. Since 1995 she has worked as a curator for the art collection of KBC Bank and since 2001 also for the Rockox House Museum in Antwerp. In this role, she has already organized several exhibitions at Rockox House and abroad. In 2018, she opened Museum Snijders & Rockoxhuis in Antwerp as curator, in which the house of the artist Frans Snyders is linked to the existing Museum Rockox Haus.
