What is it all about?

An old museum wisdom says that visitors often only want to see what they already know. Everyone brings their own prior knowledge, is interested in different things and details or reflects a personal history in the artworks and objects.

The lecture by Judaist Dr. Christiane Twiehaus sheds light on the Wallraf-Richartz Museum's collection from a Judaist perspective. Rather than focusing on technique and style, it looks at the significance of the works and their creators in Jewish history. It tells of the struggle for emancipation, stigmatization and personal fates and draws an arc from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century using selected works.

Who is our guest?

Dr. Christiane Twiehaus has headed the Department of Jewish History and Culture in the MiQua project since 2014. LVR Jewish Museum in the Cologne Archaeological Quarter. She completed her doctorate in Jewish Art on 19th century synagogue architecture at the Hochschule für Jüdische Studien in Heidelberg. She has worked in various positions in the cultural sector, including in exhibition management at the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle in Bonn, in opera dramaturgy at the Theater Bonn and as a research assistant at the Jewish Museum Franconia in Fürth, Schnaittach & Schwabach.
