Islands of remembrance in the west of Stuttgart - May-Ayim-Platz breathes history
On May 3, May-Ayim-Platz in Stuttgart-West will become a stage for history, art and encounters.
When words meet stone and bodies flow through the space, a moment is created that connects: In the heart of Stuttgart West, a special event on Saturday, 03.05.25 invites you to experience the city's history and culture of remembrance in a new way. Inspired by the Afro-German poet, educator, scientist and political activist May Ayim, the square will be transformed into a living space of remembrance for an afternoon.
Artistic performances, spoken word, dance and a mindfulness session offer visitors the opportunity to approach May Ayim's work not only by reading, but also physically and sensually. On so-called memory islands - comfortable seating in the square - thoughts can be recorded and own reflections written down - an active and collective remembering.
However, the event is not only aimed at those interested in literature and culture. It specifically creates a space for everyone who wants to engage with urban history, collective memory and the traces left behind by Black perspectives in Germany.
The event ends with a poetic conclusion: May Ayim's poems will be read aloud in the public space - a moment that resonates and raises the question: What does it mean when we speak these words together into our city?
