In the year 2044, emotions are undesirable in a society dominated by artificial intelligence. Feelings are considered a hindrance and stand in the way of efficiency. Gabrielle (Léa Seydoux) struggles with her fears and is urged to have her DNA 'cleansed' by the AI. But this procedure leads her on a journey through her past lives. In the early 20th century, she is a concert pianist in Paris; in the 2010s, she works as a model in Los Angeles. She repeatedly encounters Louis (George MacKay), a man with whom she seems to share a mysterious connection. A story of intense feelings and the challenge of living them out in the respective social contexts unfolds across different eras.
Director Bertrand Bonello travels through the centuries and shows how fear, love and loneliness relate to each other and how they manifest themselves in different societies. The Beast is a complex, eerie and David Lynch-like thriller adaptation of a short story by Henry James. (Bonello, FR CA 2023 - FSK 12 - OmdU)
