Operetta is a thing of the past. An airy genre that had its heyday in Austria around 1900, in the midst of the crumbling of the European superpowers. So, shall we cover it with the cloak of history? Not so fast! After all, there are other ways of looking at it. Like the group La Fleur, which, as a transnational collective, takes its very own look at this PHANTOM OF THE OPERETTA. From a post-colonial perspective. Based on the life and work of Emmerich Kálmán - a Hungarian Jew and successful composer in Vienna who had to flee from the Nazis to the USA. Singing and dancing, the performers explore the fruitful interrelationship between European and non-European art. Questioning racism and cultural appropriation. And show how the supposedly escapist show business is influenced by dark forces. Accompanied by a string quartet, the result is an abysmally comic and virtuoso contemporary operetta.
