Giuseppe Verdi's most popular opera is coming to the Rathausplatz! The story of "Traviata", the courtesan Violetta who has "lost her way", awaits us as a great open-air spectacle. As a depressed letter from the composer to his publisher reveals, the premiere in 1853 gave no indication of the work's later success. The realism of this work and the dazzling main character were simply too much for the premiere audience.
But the tide turned just a short time later. Since then, the drama about love, freedom, mortality and the struggle for self-determination has captivated audiences anew at every performance. In particular, the fascination of the complexly drawn Violetta, whose musical spectrum of expression ranges from sweet to frivolous to passionate, is unbroken. And the viewer is right to wonder who actually lost their way in this opera.
