LANDEN

In the organizer's words:

BRD/LBN 2023, essay film, 64 min

Director: Vanessa Nica Mueller

Language: OmeU (German with English subtitles)

LANDEN is an essay film by Vanessa Nica Mueller about coastlines and plants. It follows its protagonist on her botanical journey from the Wadden Sea to the coast of Lebanon. She collects material for her herbarium and witnesses the economic collapse and political instability in Lebanon. On fragile terrain, plants such as the marsh samphire, the milk thistle or the crimson cylinder cleaner navigate us to the banks of the Beirut River, to a growing micro-forest between city highways or along modernist architecture. In this way, the flora tells of adaptation and change, of resilience and feared change, of hyperinflation and deserted places.

After the film, we invite you to a discussion with the director Vanessa Nica Mueller.

Along fragile ecosystems she loses herself between modernist architecture or at the banks of the Beirut River to find some hope for a future after the fall. A metaphoric journey where nature leads us through crises and loss. (German with English subtitles)
