It's getting wild

A good 250 events invite city dwellers to discover nature.
The 2025 focus is dedicated to wild animals large and small. Excursions, information, games and knowledge in abundance await Hamburg residents on this special weekend!
The kick-off event for the Long Day will take place on June 20 at the "Botschaft der Wildtiere".

Our city is full of life - and that doesn't just mean the people who live here. There is life in gardens, on balconies, in the trees of the city, and life can even be found in the cracks in the asphalt on the Reeperbahn: Stalks and beetles conquer even the smallest niches of nature. On the Long Day of CityNature, we take a closer look and go out to experience, enjoy and learn. The largest nature event in northern Germany takes place this year on June 21 and 22, with over 250 events. Those who take part will be right in the middle of the action, grounding themselves and sharpening their senses for the life around them that is often overlooked in everyday life. Guided tours and excursions take you to parks and gardens, floodplains, dunes and rivers, up to Schleswig-Holstein, Schwerin and the Lüneburg Heath - quality time in the countryside, with expert guidance and friendly people.

Focus 2025: animals in the city and surrounding area

What's creeping around? What lives, hums, builds, predates, eats, chirps, spins, crawls and burrows in our urban area and in the vast metropolitan region around Hamburg? Which ecological niches support the great diversity of wild life in our immediate neighborhood? What are the challenges - for us humans and for the animals that live among us? This year's focus of the Long Day of Urban Nature is dedicated to the wildlife in our midst. Anyone thinking only of foxes and pigeons is barely scratching the top of the molehill. This year's focus tours are dedicated to bats, deer, spiders, grasshoppers, swans, raccoons, sparrows, wild bees, wolves, squirrels, otters and many more.

What happens on the action weekend?

In addition to the main events, the local flora will of course not be neglected. A variety of excursions and activities are dedicated to trees and bushes, grass and herbs, lichens and moorland and everything that nature has to offer in the Hanseatic city and the surrounding area. Experiencing and understanding nature up close is the aim of the Long Day of CityNature, an initiative of the Loki Schmidt Foundation, carried out and organized in cooperation with traditionally over a hundred organizations and individuals. The more than 250 events are all accompanied and led by experts. Nature-loving citizens of all ages are guaranteed to find their area of interest or completely new, surprising suggestions that their living environment has to offer. The offer includes guided tours on land and water, on foot, by bike or boat, activities for children and families, for creative people and those with a thirst for knowledge. Mindfulness events help to sharpen the senses, experience harmony, find your own center and listen to the subtle voices of nature. Experience with all your senses!

Kick-off on June 20

The Long Day of CityNature Hamburg will open on June 20, 2025 with a poetry slam and film screening at the "Embassy of Wildlife" in Hamburg's HafenCity. The event is a cooperation with the German Wildlife Foundation.
