☆ Last Days Of April ☆
Since the mid-nineties, Stockholm band Last Days Of April have been producing their dazzling LPs, bursting with catchy melody lines that have earned lead singer, guitarist and songwriter Karl Larsson a reputation as an outstanding songwriter.
With Even The Good Days Are Bad, Larsson & Co are now releasing the follow-up to 2015's Sea Of Clouds, their tenth album in total. It contains eight songs penned by Larsson that show him at the peak of his creative powers, just as the entire band reaches a new level of energy, sincerity and brilliance on this album.
"You want new/New gets old/Is it worth it?/I don't know," sings Larsson in the album's title track, a meditative introspection that nevertheless displays an ecstatic, almost anthemic character. A catchy tune, a catchy anaconda, with a message that is not cynical and resignative, but full of wisdom and wonder. One is tempted to take these lines as the motto of the whole album: Shimmering guitars, lurching synthesizers, precise drums, a polished, analogue production and Larsson's vulnerable yet robust voice ... all this contributes to the fact that Even The Good Days Are Bad sounds new and old, contemporary and classic, time-bound and timeless at the same time.
Was that intentional? "No, not consciously," says Larsson. "I just try to write down the songs the way they sound in my head. Even if I feel like I'm doing something new with every album - I have nothing against 'timeless' and 'classic'."
The beginnings of Even The Good Days Are Bad date back to 2019, when Larsson dug up some songs he had written in the early 2000s. This was accompanied by a whole slew of new material, allowing him to sit down with his longtime rhythm section, consisting of Magnus Olsson on drums and Rikard Lidhamn on bass, at the legendary Studio Gröndahl in Stockholm in the fall. The band spent two marathon days here, where not only Last Days Of April but also The Hives had already recorded several records.
"We recorded everything on tape at Gröndahl," reports Larsson and explains that this was their preferred method for recording the basic tracks. "All analog, and lots of external devices. Very classic ... I'm a technology freak." Incidentally, the atmospheric Mellotron on "Had Enough" was contributed by regular guest Frederik Hermansson, while Frans Hägglund was the sound engineer. Larsson then took the recordings to his home studio to do the overdubs and the loving final editing. This allowed the diversity and depth that permeate the entire album to unfold without haste or pressure.
But on the way to becoming an eternally shining star in the pop sky, something unexpected happened: a global pandemic. Even The Good Days Are Bad was as good as finished, but the crisis made all processes slower and more complicated. Even more significantly, the new album took on a ghostly, deeply prophetic character. The title track suddenly reflected the mood of the entire planet. And when Larsson sings on "Alone": "When I wake up I feel alone/When I go to bed I feel alone," it feels as if he is putting into words the isolation that we have all experienced and are experiencing, thereby taking some of the burden away from us. "As for the lyrics," says Larsson, "they should be clear and unambiguous. No gobbledygook."
The result is cathartic through and through, which is exactly what the doctors have prescribed for 2021. "Whatever feelings it triggers, let them come," Larsson says of Even The Good Days Are Bad, followed by the following advice: "It's best to sound loud."
