The directors Marcel Carné, Julien Duvivier, Jean Renoir and others are not the only protagonists of poetic realism (a style of French cinema of the 1930s and 1940s). The often melancholy mood of most of the films is also due to the work of the cameramen, such as the German émigré Eugen Schüfftan, who captured the literally shadowy lives of the characters in LE QUAI DE BRUMES in a contrasting and nuanced light. His shots of the foggy port city of Le Havre, where Nelly (Michèle Morgan) meets and falls in love with the fugitive deserter Jean (Jean Gabin), are famous.
