"It was after a long night in the vaults -

... when the intoxication of the music had subsided and the smell of longing, pain and nostalgia had mixed with the sweat of concentration and settled in the old stones, when the last guest had long since left and peace had returned to the old walls; there we sat together with a glass of red wine and talked about the "good, old" America, about the good "old days" that weren't so good, but had left us a tremendous musical treasure. The old days, before our times, the times when the blues was still folk music, in areas where you could meet the musicians in the cotton fields or in red light districts where they played in pubs and bars.
To be able to travel back in time (mind you, with the knowledge of the return ticket back to the present)..., we mused and it became quiet. Who would you have liked to have met in person in the 20s to 40s...

I, who was once a classical violinist, which you can still hear in my playing, wished I could have met the early blues violinist Eddie Anthony or the jazz violinist Angelina Rivera. Martin Zemke, the bass player, who used to be more into blues rock, called John Lee Hooker. Blues musician Peter Funk, who specializes in lap steel guitar, thought about it for a while and stared at his 12-string guitar, lost in thought, before slowly saying:
"I'd love to meet a real bad boy again. One like Lead Belly, for example." And even before we had emptied our glasses of red wine, it was clear: we would be the "Lead Belly Project". We would work together on a program dedicated to him, the very well-known songs, but also the unknown ones. Not in arrangements that others have already found, but in what Lead Belly speaks to us, what his music has to say to us today. "
