The work colleague who shares a dubious study about concealed vaccination deaths. The conversation at the barbecue where "knifemen" are suddenly discussed. The cousin who "just wants to ask questions" about the credibility of public broadcasters. These are all situations that many of us experience on a regular basis. Anyone can publish and disseminate information online. What could actually be a great opportunity for democracy has become a threat to it. How can we counter fake news and conspiracy narratives, whether in private or online?
CORRECTIV journalist Bastian Schlange has delved into the abyss of disinformation for "The only true fact checkbook" and researched how the narratives of lateral thinkers, corona deniers and other networks continue to spread. He traces their communication strategies and how the enemies of democracy benefit from them. Nevertheless, Bastian Schlange is convinced that our democracy has not (yet) lost. His lecture is a plea for the editorial society and the responsibility of each individual. Afterwards, he will be available for a discussion with the audience.

Bastian Schlange has been Head of Content at CORRECTIV.Verlag since 2020. Until he moved to the post for family reasons, he was head of CORRECTIV.Ruhr, the NRW editorial team in Essen, and the CORRECTIV.Klima editorial team. He was awarded the Axel Springer Prize for Investigative Research for an undercover investigation. Schlange spent a year infiltrating the German poaching scene. Before joining CORRECTIV, he co-founded the Wattenscheider Schule, an experimental site for unconventional undercover and gonzo reports in the urban jungle of the Ruhr Valley - his home. During his journalism studies at TU Dortmund University , he worked for Deutsche Presse-Agentur and Bild, among others. He also wrote the life stories of old sailors for Ankerherz Verlag for several years.
