Lena Winkel: Tiere richtig zeichnen

Lena Winkel is publishing a theory comic "Drawing animals correctly" in fall 2025. It will be two books in one: a comic and an animal theory that make reference to animals in picture books:

Animal figures are central carriers of meaning in children's books and comics. "Drawing animals correctly" discusses traditional stylistic devices such as the anthropomorphization of animals and considers the potential of the medium of illustration to contribute to the cultivation of animal-sensitive media literacy. The two-part book project is not only dedicated to these topics in a classically academic way, but also puts them up for discussion using the means of graphic storytelling itself (and thus also numerous anthropomorphic animals).

Lena Winkel grew up in the Westerwald and studied illustration in Hamburg and Paris. She has been illustrating children's and picture books for all kinds of publishers and publishing comics since 2014. She was awarded the Berthold Leibinger Prize in 2023 and the Uwe Lüders Prize in 2024. She thinks ferrets are pretty good.
