Post-war modernist composers such as György Ligeti, Luigi Nono, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Hans Werner Henze belonged to the same age group as Pierre Boulez. But hardly anyone else shaped French and international musical life as much as the musician from Montbrison on the Loire, who as a composer, conductor, theorist and founder of important institutions constantly opened up new things.
